Looking back 15 years ago finds the NCUA Board considering how large a bill federal credit unions will be handed to fund the agency in 1991. At issue is a proposed two-fee, two-bracket plan, which opponents say will result in substantially higher operating fees of hundreds of large credit unions. Those supporting the proposal say if the board backs the current 14-category fee scale small CUs will see their expectation of lower fees dashed. NAFCU President Ken Robinson said he is not opposed to taking more money from the insurance fund to cover NCUA's costs rather than the adoption of a new fee schedule. “The agency has not made a case for changing the system,” said Robinson. “I hope a commission would be something NCUA would convene. If we can come to the table with no personal or institutional interests it's a good idea. If it's going to be political football, we aren't interested.” That issue also finds credit unions gearing up for CUNA's credit union rally in Washington, designed to show “grassroots” support for the country's CU movement.
