WASHINGTON-Several lawmakers from each party added their names to the growing list of Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (H.R. 2317) co-sponsors recently. The addition of nine new members Sept. 15 brought the total up to 40, including main sponsor Congressman Ed Royce (R-Calif.). Representatives Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.), Kevin Brady (R-Texas), John Lewis (D-Ga.), Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas), Michael Honda (D-Calif.), Norm Dicks (D-Wa.), Dave Weldon (R-Fla.), William Lacy Clay (D-Mo.), and Michael Sodrel (R-Ind.) signed onto the bill Sept. 15. Total support from lawmakers is now 94, far surpassing last year's 69 backers. The Republican/Democrat split stands at 38/58, counting Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) with the Democrats. Last Congress, there were concerns that Republican co-sponsors were lagging, but with a 40% to 60% division between Republicans and Democrats, respectively, it is not as much an issue this year. Key provisions of CURIA would provide Prompt Corrective Action relief and expand business lending opportunities, among other things.
