MADISON, Wis. -With donations still pouring in, the National Credit Union Foundation said its disaster relief fund for Katrina victims has now topped $1.25 million with an "unprecedented $100,000 grant of our own" committed to the fund following board approval. "It's hard to predict where the final numbers might end up but we are close to the $1.5 million raised for Oklahoma City bombing victims," said Steve Delfin, executive director of the NCUF. NCUF has said most of the funds it has collected through state Leagues and other CU entities will go directly to CUs and their employees "to help them get back on their feet" but individual Leagues have also allocated individual grants directed to general humanitarian agencies like the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. One of the major state contributors, the Oklahoma Credit Union League, said its foundation grant has now topped $93,000, "which is $15,000 beyond our newest goal" set only a week before, said a spokesman. Delfin stressed that both CUs, employees or members can contribute online at www.ncuf.coop.
