WASHINGTON and ARLINGTON, Va.-CUNA and NAFCU are rolling up their sleeves and helping on the administrative end of clean up and relief after Hurricane Katrina. CUNA has made an initial contribution to the National Credit Union Foundation’s National Disaster Relief Fund of $10,000 and is coordinating a number of assistance programs. These programs are helping provide generators, mobile branches, ATMs, and satellite phones to credit unions and leagues in the devastated areas. More items are being pledged every day, according to the trade group. CUNA is holding conference calls with the Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida credit union leagues daily to assist with communication. In addition, CUNA is putting together a database of credit union staff offering on-site assistance as necessary and has established an online bulletin board. CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica also took a call from Treasury Secretary John Snow to discuss how credit unions’ recovery efforts are going and what they are doing for their affected members. The NAFCU Foundation has swung into action to funnel contributions to the American Red Cross’s relief efforts. NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker notified the group’s members earlier this month of the effort, which he added is consistent with credit unions’ charitable contributions requirements. Checks for tax-deductible contributions should be made out to “NAFCU Foundation/American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund” and mailed to: NAFCU Foundation/American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund c/o NAFCU ATTN: Joe Boyle 3138 North 10th St. Arlington, VA 22201-2149
