Washington League Gives $11,000 To Literacy

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Credit union contributions to the state’s Financial Literacy Public Private Partnership have totaled $16,000, the Washington Credit Union League announced last week. The League said it wrote a check for $11,000 to the state Superintendent of Public Instruction in voluntary donations with BECU contributing an additional $5,000. The SPI is the primary agency charged with overseeing K-12 education in Washington State. It supports the 296 school districts of Washington State and is responsible for the basic education of 1.1 million children. “The contributions to furthering financial literacy ultimately benefit the larger society,” said John Annaloro, League president and CEO. “Washington’s marketplace will improve as a new generation of financially literate consumers graduate from public schools and are less apt to become victims of financial predators.” The League said it lobbied for the fund last year under a bill enacted by the legislature to assist school districts on literacy projects.
