DETROIT – Claiming that strong sales in June and July pushed by its popular and successful "employee discounts for everyone" promotion have left it with depleted inventories of the 2005 models the offer applied to, General Motors announced July 27 it was discontinuing the promotion Aug. 1. The company said it will move to place more emphasis on permanently lowering sticker prices instead of offering big rebates. Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group both started their own employee pricing program in July, and at press time there was no indication how they would respond to GM's action. However the two have typically followed GM's lead on incentives.
