SALEM, Ore. – A new type of checking account launched by Marion and Polk Schools CU will allow the holder to donate interest to local nonprofit groups. Over time, participants will accumulate "community interest, which MaPS will convert the interest at the end of each quarter into a cash donation to the groups. The groups include Habitat for Humanity, the Boys and Girls Club of Salem, Salem YWCA and the Monmouth/Independence YMCA. "Over the past two years MaPS has donated on behalf of its VISA card holders over $130,000 back to our schools," said Dan Penn, the credit union's president and CEO. "Building on that success, we began looking for a program that would assist an even wider segment of our community." The $243 million MaPs CU serves nearly 37,000 members.
