SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Alert employees at CenCorp Corporate Credit Union have picked up on a check fraud scheme that could affect credit unions throughout the nation, though it’s too early to tell the scope of the problem. CenCorp has flagged about 10 checks so far created by a service called Qchex ( that allows users to create their own checks using their account number at a financial institution. Qchex users can either print and mail checks or send them electronically. The checks CenCorp has seen so far are known as “demand drafts”, a type of check that states no signature is required. CenCorp CEO Bill Walby said CenCorp picked up on the fraud because a check came through on an account that did not have check writing ability. “This isn’t a corporate specific story. As I’ve researched it I’m finding other stories. We want people to know they should be suspicious of these items coming through. We’re contacting our members and other corporates,” said Walby.
