BALTIMORE – From almost falling and being out of the race or worse badly injured, Philadelphia FCU Director Chuck Zacney's horse Afleet Alex pulled off the victory in the Preakness Stakes on May 21. Zacney is one of five owners of Afleet Alex. The horse showed amazing balance when it was able to stay on its feet after another horse – Scrappy T – veered into Afleet Alex's path. "Man what a day. We always new we had a terrific horse. He's got the heart of the champion, true guts, just amazing. For him to get bounced around regain his balance and pull away was incredible," said Zacney. The Preakness is one of three races included in the Triple Crown. In the first, the Kentucky Derby, Afleet Alex finished third. The third race is the Belmont Stakes to be held June 11. "That race is a mile and a half. It should be a smaller field, with eight to 10 horses. We feel good," said Zacney. The Preakness is the shortest of the three races at a mile and three-sixteenths. The Belmont is longer at a mile and a half. Zacney noted that the CU's chairman was in attendance and a number of other CU employees and volunteers were cheering on from various locations.
