FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. – Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) and Forest Avenue Elementary School have teamed up to help Kindergarten through fifth grade students become more financially savvy with "Banking Day". "The children loved the recent Banking Day, which was held in April at the school. The savings program is only in its first month of operation, and more than 60 accounts have been opened for student savers," said TFCU Branch Manager Ed Caballero. The TFCU program provides a mix of presentations on the importance of saving and games to help students gain practical experience with currency and financial planning. "There was a lot of interaction and laughs and we had a great time and so did the students. We gave them crayons, coloring books and comic books as mementos and to remind them to continue saving. It gives me great satisfaction to give something back to the communities we serve," said Caballero. According to TFCU President/CEO Robert G. Allen, in addition to "Banking Day", the credit union has also developed Bank-at-School programs for high school students, participates in High School Career Days and provides personal finance courses. At the lower grade levels TFCU also gives branch tours to elementary school groups and scouting troops.
