WASHINGTON-The Utah League of Credit Unions completed a Hike the Hill last week with some positive news from its congressional delegation. According to CEO Scott Simpson, the league's main objective this visit was to deliver the approximately 158,000 signatures it collected from Utah's citizens opposing the state legislature's resolution urging the U.S. Congress to look into taxing credit unions. Leaving Senator Bob Bennett's (R-Utah) office, Simpson said the lawmaker reiterated that he "doesn't see an appetite" for taxing credit unions at the federal level. The league planned to visit with its entire five-person delegation. After visiting with Congressman Tim Matheson (D) and Bennett, Simpson said, "We have received nothing but support. All the responses are measured, though, as you might expect." The credit union-bank battle has been particularly intense in Utah over the last few years.
