NEW YORK – It took one Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Team in Training meeting to get Montauk Credit Union Marketing Director Christina Goethe hooked on running. With a goal of raising $4,000, Goethe is currently in training to run her first marathon -the Rock-n-Roll Marathon in San Diego on June 5, 2005, which will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. "Actually a friend of mine did it last year and I was so moved by the leukemia survivors' stories, especially one girl that was my age, that I signed up right there," said Goethe. "I'm pretty active as far as working out and this is great because not only am I helping people but I get to finally run a marathon which I've always wanted to do." The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training provides training to run or walk a whole or half marathon or participate in a triathlon or century (100-mile) bike ride. As a program participant, Goethe is working with a professional endurance trainer for the next three months to get her ready for the 26.2 mile run with her team that is made up of leukemia survivors. "My teammates some of them have only been out of treatment for six months so it is an honor to do this with them," said Goethe. "It is pretty amazing. That's why I'm doing everything I can to raise as much money as possible from donation requests and special events to corporate sponsorships. I need all the help and motivation I can get and I know that credit union people are usually willing to help out." Goethe says the easiest way to donate is via her personal fundraising Web site (www.active.com/donations/fundraise_public.cfm?key=tntnyccgoethe) provided by Team in Training.
