MONROE, Mich. – Denise Fox, CEO of the $46 million Education Plus Credit Union here, is on her way to Sri Lanka next month to lend a helping hand in the rebuilding efforts. Fox is busy getting all the necessary vaccinations and preparing her gear to travel to the Eastern shore of tsunami-devastated Sri Lanka with a small cadre of workers from the Habitat for Humanity. She's volunteered with the group for the last three years. "I know it's not going to be any picnic or vacation of any sort. It's an extremely devastated area. There's no electricity, no hot water. I just recently went and got my mosquito net," said Fox. Fox has traveled to many countries around the world, including Turkey, Greece and all the Caribbean Islands, but she never imagined getting shots for things like polio again. Fox will fly into Hong Kong, then to Columbo, Sri Lanka and take a day-long ground transportation trip to Batticloa, on the Eastern shore of the country. The entire trip will span about two and a half weeks. Fox is bringing along her own PR person so to speak. Justin Matley, the owner of the local newspaper,The Monroe Journal, will accompany Fox and document the entire trip. Fox is traveling with a group of 13 from the Habitat for Humanity. She is looking for any sponsorship help from the credit union industry, noting she wasn't expecting out of pocket costs to be so high. "It's been a lot more expensive than I had thought. Locally when you work with Habitat, local churches and organizations provide meals. This trip requires us to pay $1,500 for food and bottled water," said Fox. Just getting there will cost her another $1,500 in plane tickets. Fox said she also doesn't want to be caught empty handed by the village's children. "I want to try and bring something appropriate to the children, candy or treats. If there are 1,000 kids in the village, I want to have something for all of them," she said. As for the credit union, Fox said she has a capable management staff who will take on her duties while she's gone. [email protected]
