ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School has signed a Partnership Agreement with MidWest Financial Credit Union to open a student-run credit union branch at the school. "When the credit union approached King about this program, I asked them to present the idea to the students," said MLK Junior Elementary Principal Dr. Edmundson. "A select number of 5th graders listened to the idea, presented it to the rest of the school, and together we decided it was a good fit for us. The students are really excited about it." While the branch operating days and hours are still being set, training for the student volunteers is slated to begin soon. In addition to the branch, credit union volunteers will teach the Junior Achievement program to every class at King Elementary. "Junior Achievement will help students learn and apply money management principles beyond what we can teach with an in-school branch," said MidWest Financial CU School Branch Coordinator Lesley Arthur. "It's just one more way to reach the students and make the lessons meaningful and fun." The King Elementary program is MidWest Financial's second student-run school branch. Fortis Academy in Ypsilanti, Michigan teamed up with the credit union for a student-run school branch earlier this year.
