MOUNDS VIEW, Minn. – Credit union service provider Liberty has shown its support for tsunami relief efforts by donating $10,000 to help South Asia credit unions rebuild. “Our company’s spirit of giving and helping others is very much in line with the cooperative spirit of credit unions worldwide – it’s people helping people,” said Stan Hollen, president/CEO, Liberty Enterprises. “Whether in our own back yard or half a world away, the philosophy of helping others in need remains strong for members of the international credit union community. At Liberty, we feel a responsibility to lend a hand to those affected by the tsunami, helping affected communities rebuild and restore their ways of life.” Industry officials estimate that 13,000 credit unions serving approximately four million members in 11 countries were affected by the tsunami. In Sri Lanka alone, the WOCCU reports that more than 200 of the 800 credit unions damaged by the tsunami have been completely destroyed, with records, staff and members likely swept out to sea. Liberty’s gift will help provide immediate aid assistance, as well as funds for rebuilding damaged areas.
