HARRISBURG, Pa. – Credit unions in Pennsylvania celebrated election victories won by several credit union-supported candidates in the state's primary election on April 27. Among the victors was Republican U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter who is seeking a fifth term and narrowly beat Republican Congressman Pat Toomey by a 51 to 49% margin to take the GOP nomination. Specter will face U.S. Rep. Joseph Hoeffel (D) in the fall. Among some of the other primary winners were state Sen. Charlie Dent (R); Congressman Bill Shuster (R);, state Sen. Allyson Schwartz (D), a co-sponsor of the State Credit Union Parity Act; and Rep. John Peterson (R), a co-sponsor of H.R. 1151. In other races, Scott Paterno won the Republican nomination in the 17th District Congressional seat. In November, he will face Rep. Tim Holden (D), a co-sponsor of the Credit Union Regulatory Improvements Act (CURIA). In addition, in the race for State Attorney General, Republican Tom Corbett defeated Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor, and Democrat Jim Eisenhower won over Northampton County D.A. John Morganelli.
