WESTBROOK, Me. – For credit unions in Maine, 2003 was a busy year. In final figures released by the Maine Credit Union League, the 2003 Maine CU Campaign for Ending Hunger Campaign raised $209,030.75 – an 8% increase over last year's record-setting total of $193,624.02 and the seventh consecutive year the campaign has set a new record. With the 2003 total, the campaign has now raised more than $1.53 million since it began in 1990. It is reported that one in every four Maine children goes hungry and one in every 10 Mainers experience "food insecurity." Greater Portland Municipal Credit Union took top honors in both total funds raised and the highest money per member. GPM CU raised an impressive $15,027 and $1.77 per member. Not only are credit unions here doing some good in their communities, but they are also experiencing quite a growth spurt. Maine CUs' assets increased 8.28% to over $3.62 billion, loans grew 9.64%, shares rose 7.78% and membership grew slightly to 598,029 members in 2003. Nationally Maine has been the fifth strongest credit union state for the past three years.
