WASHINGTON-Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-Pa.), one of the original sponsors of H.R. 1151, typically favors credit union issues, but bankruptcy reform is not one of them. In fact, after his work with the credit unions, he has trouble getting the attention of the banking community, Kanjorski jested. The congressman said, "It's unfortunate to see us mixing issues in serious legislation that blocks the legislation, from what side it does not matter. It doesn't make for good legislating to do that." However, Senator Chuck Schumer's (D-N.Y.) insertion of the abortion issue into the bankruptcy reform bill is not just politics. Kanjorski explained, "We have a fifty-fifty split philosophy in there. You really need to address those philosophical questions to get adequate representation for those philosophies." He continued, "I can't blame people for using engines because I've used them myself. The fact of the matter is a lot of times we have an issue that doesn't get addressed unless you find an engine to attach it to, particularly the Senate is particularly adept at that."
