ALEXANDRIA, Va.-Rosario Marin, the 41st Treasurer of the United States, will keynote the opening session of NCUA's upcoming Access Across America workshop in El Paso, Texas on Wednesday, September 4th. Marin will address financial literacy issues in America. Overall, the workshop will focus on federal and state resources available to all credit unions as part of the financial institutions' outreach efforts to people from all walks of life, including the Colonias region of the southwestern United States, NCUA Chairman Dennis Dollar explained. Though the workshop has an emphasis on the Colonias region, the broad program topics and top speakers in government will provide valuable information for credit unions nationwide he stressed. In addition to overseeing the U.S. Mint, and spearheading Treasury's new Financial Literacy Initiative, Marin also advises the Secretary of Treasury on matters relating to coinage, currency and the production of other instruments issued by the United States. Marin, herself, moved to the United States from Mexico at 14 years old. She is the highest-ranking Latino in the Bush Administration and the first U.S. Treasurer born outside the United States. She formerly served in then-California Governor Pete Wilson's administration.
