Looking back four years ago finds credit union solidarity emerging from terrorist bombings of the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. A World Council of Credit Unions fund accepting contributions from the United States was just the first step in the effort to rebuild one credit union destroyed in the bombings and to get two others that were damaged up and running. The WOCCU planned to hold a march to the bomb site to offer prayer for victims and their families. "In the face of this tragedy, I have no doubt that the international credit union community will come together to help those in need," said Alan Parry, WOCCU Board President. Also in that issue, a SCE FCU/Ultradata/Microsoft collaborative effort helped land SCE's Internet banking system a place in the American Museum of History and a gig in a Microsoft sales video. "SCE had a challenge-a problem really- that other credit unions of like-size face throughout the United States, `how can they be competitive when it comes to remote access with much larger money center banks?' " said Tim Lerew, director of product management for Ultradata. The remote access capabilities pad off from both a competitive and operational standpoint by averaging about 64,000 transactions a month.
