ARLINGTON, Va. – Strong performance of its Western Union subsidiary is the primary factor behind First Data's 21% increase in this year's second quarter earnings over last year's. Overall revenues rose 10% to $1.875 billion, the company reported. First Data processes credit cards for hundreds of credit unions. The Western Union subsidiary, which primarily wires money to various places, including outside the country, generated 40% of the company's revenue, First Data reported. The number of Western Union locations rose 20%, to 130,000 worldwide since last year, the company said. Revenue from the company's merchant services division increased 15% to $647 million, while revenue from card issuing services fell 5%, the company said.
