WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Credit unions here have launched a first strike in helping consumers fight back against new ATM surcharges – with knowledge. A statewide campaign developed by the Iowa Credit Union League named "Be Card Smart" provides consumers with tips on how to avoid hefty ATM surcharges. Prompted by the recent federal court ruling that now allows Iowa financial institutions to surcharge at their ATMs, the campaign is geared toward consumer education and awareness. "What sounds like a dollar here and a few bucks there can add up quickly," said ICUL Vice President Patrick Jury. "We think it's important that Iowans know there are ways to avoid or minimize these new ATM surcharges, and we want consumers to be mindful of it now rather than months down the road." Iowa was the last state to ban ATM surcharges, and it is estimated that surcharges here will generate $75 million in new annual revenue for big banks. All Iowa credit unions have been equipped with a "Be Card Smart" marketing kit that includes brochures and other promotional/public relations materials. In addition, the information is featured on the league's Web site www.iowacreditunions.com
