AUSTIN, Texas — Personnel from the estimated 100 Texas credit unions in the "hit" zone of Hurricane Ike have traveled to sites as far away as Oklahoma and Arkansas to escape the storm's wrath, the state's top CU regulator, Harold Feeney, said Friday.
"We're only crossing our fingers" regarding any dire impact of the storm on life and property, said Feeney, the CU commissioner.
All of the CUs in coastal areas surrounding Houston and Galveston have now closed with employees evacuated, said Feeney noting his office has been receiving proscribed notification by CUs of their intent to shutter operations and implement disaster relief schedules.
Drawing on the Gustav experience, he said Texas CUs have so far been diligent about signing up with both the Government Emergency Telecommunication Service or the Wireless Priority Service designed to keep crisis lines open. Louisiana regulators said some CUs failed to register in time and had problems obtaining up to date information. "We got that done early on," said Feeney.
