The NCUA issues new bans on former CU employees.

Three former credit union employees, including a CEO, who worked at credit unions in Utah, Pennsylvania and New York, were banned from ever working at a federally insured financial institution, the NCUA said Wednesday.

During her employment at the $3.6 billion Goldenwest Federal Credit Union in Washington Terrace, Utah, from 2017 to November 2023, Anh-Thu Nguyen made numerous unauthorized transactions by transferring funds from member accounts to her own personal accounts, the NCUA alleged in a consent prohibition order. Nguyen also allegedly caused Goldenwest to issue checks, which she allegedly misappropriated for her own use.

The NCUA did not disclose how many member accounts were affected, the total amount involved, whether Nguyen made restitution, or if the matter was referred to law enforcement.

In August 2024, Amber Grabill, a former member service representative at the $59.8 million Merho Federal Credit Union in Johnstown, Pa., withdrew $3,916 from two members' accounts and deposited the funds into her personal account, the NCUA alleged.

She did not admit to or deny any wrongdoing.

The federal agency did not report in its prohibition order whether Grabill made restitution or if the incident was reported to police.

In its prohibition notice letter to Dorothy Ellis, former president/CEO at the $4.7 million St. John’s Buffalo Federal Credit Union, the NCUA said she was convicted in Erie County Court, N.Y., on one count of forgery in the second degree last September.

According to the federal agency, the conviction was in connection with her employment at the credit union. She was sentenced to five years’ probation, according to the NCUA.

St. John's Buffalo merged into the $65.3 million Radius Federal Credit Union in Kenmore, N.Y., in October 2022.
