The $2.8 billion Chartway Credit Union in Virginia Beach, Va., demonstrated its commitment to supporting the African American community in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia Thursday when it announced a new partnership with Norfolk State University (NSU) – the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the state.

As the sponsor of NSU's athletics program for the 2024-2025 season, Chartway's name and brand will have a prominent presence at various NSU sports venues, including William "Dick" Price Stadium and the Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall, Chartway said.

According to Chartway, the partnership represents an expansion of its multicultural journey that began last fall when it received its Juntos Avanzamos designation from Inclusiv. What's more, the credit union said "the relationship it is building with NSU around its athletics program is a catalyst to help young African American men and women gain financial knowledge so they can lead a financially empowered life."

"Norfolk State University holds a distinguished position as a historically black college with a profound impact on the local community," Melissa Cade, Chartway's chief retail officer, said. "Chartway recognizes the importance of this institution and its role in fostering growth and opportunity for African American students and residents in the region, so we are honored to partner with NSU athletics as part of our multicultural journey. Through our combined efforts, we will empower our youth in the area of financial wellness and further our reach into the Black community."

Clifford Porter, Jr., vice president for university advancement at NSU, added, "Norfolk State University is pleased to be a part of this progressive partnership with Chartway Credit Union. Our collaboration will benefit our students, faculty, staff and alumni in ways that will enhance their quality of life for years to come. As a Historically Black College and University, Norfolk State has its origins in creating avenues for the social mobility of people of color in Hampton Roads and beyond. Today, our focus is broader but remains true to that original mission. Our friends at Chartway join us in this effort, and we look forward to the years of progress."
