Kelly Marie Givens will be sentenced in May for stealing more than $12,000 from the $23.7 million FedStar Federal Credit Union in Salem, Va., the U.S. Attorney's office for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke said Tuesday.
Givens, 37, of Salem, pleaded guilty to one felony count of misapplication of credit union funds at a Virginia federal court hearing last week.
She was named president/CEO of FedStar during the fourth quarter of 2015, according to the credit union's profile report filed with the NCUA.
Between 2018 and 2020 she used the FedStar credit card and FedStar's Amazon business account for personal purchases totaling more than $12,000, prosecutors said.
Givens purchased running shoes, hiking shoes, a patio umbrella, a hair removal device, tickets for sporting events, photography services, a television, an iPod and other personal items, according to court documents.
Prosecutors said Givens concealed her embezzlement by providing false information to FedStar's board of directors and the NCUA.
She was replaced by Jamie Priest, who was named interim CEO after the second quarter of 2020, according to the credit union's NCUA profile report.
Given's attorney did not respond to CU Times' request for comment on Wednesday.
The NCUA approved the credit union's merger with the $246 million InFirst Federal Credit Union in Alexandria, Va., during the second quarter of 2021 because of FedStar's poor financial condition.
At the end of 2020, FedStar posted a net income loss of $2,203,602 and a net worth of 0.65%, according to NCUA financial performance reports.
By the end of the first quarter in 2021, FedStar recorded a net income loss of $16,482 and a net worth of 0.71%, NCUA financial performance reports showed.
Chartered in 1947, FedStar served more than 3,500 members who were government employees and their families.
