Every two years, new political winds blow through Washington as a new Congress is sworn in. The winds are particularly forceful this year as President-elect Joe Biden's Administration is set to reshape the executive branch in the coming months while attempting to put our country and economy on a path to recovery from the pandemic.

With these changes in political leadership, there comes a renewed need to build relationships with incoming policymakers and strengthen those with returning members. Regardless of someone's tenure in Washington or their political party, NAFCU is committed to getting work done on behalf of credit unions. That's why we develop a bold advocacy agenda each year, and spend our days touting credit unions' not-for-profit, member-owned message throughout the halls of Congress and with officials in the Biden Administration.

Our support of this cooperative industry, this movement and the people who work tirelessly to provide extreme member service to millions of Americans is unwavering. We build these strong relationships with decision makers so that we can share your positive stories – that have a lasting impact across Washington – every day.

This is what we do at NAFCU: We fight for credit unions.

The coronavirus pandemic has tested our nation in many ways, and small businesses have fought tooth and nail to stay afloat during these uncertain times. While policymakers debated relief measures in Congress, credit unions went to work on Main Street to deliver financial lifelines to those struggling to make ends meet.

Due to the efforts of NAFCU's award-winning advocacy team, policymakers took note. Credit unions saw strong and meaningful legislative and regulatory reforms in 2020, including SBA PPP funding for credit unions, the Federal Reserve lifting Regulation D, greater access to the NCUA's Central Liquidity Facility, and increased troubled debt restructuring flexibility, among other reforms.

But NAFCU will not rest on its laurels. There are plenty of pressing issues for us to tackle on behalf of the credit union industry, and our foot will remain on the gas in 2021. We will advocate with boldness and vigor as we:

  • Support legislation and regulation that helps credit unions grow and better serve their membership;
  • Fight back against banker attacks and work to establish regulatory standards for fintech and other non-depository institutions;
  • Promote clear rules of the road and streamlined regulation that allows credit unions to put more resources toward serving members;
  • Advocate for the NCUA to continue to be the sole regulator of credit unions; and,
  • Encourage federal standards for data privacy and data security that recognize existing regulatory requirements for credit unions.

We are proud to work on behalf of credit unions and your 123 million members. We will provide nothing less than extreme member service and bold federal advocacy for our members.

Let us push forward together.
