Collaborate to succeed.

As they continue to fight an onslaught from banks, CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle on Monday implored credit unions to stop competing with each other.

"We've got credit unions that are actually competing with other credit unions," Nussle said in a speech at CUNA's Governmental Affairs Conference. "It makes no sense." He offered no specific examples of such competition.

In his speech, Nussle added, "We can be fiercely independent and fiercely cooperative."

Nussle also announced that Vice President Mike Pence will be speaking at GAC on Tuesday morning.

Nussle told those attending GAC that credit unions must also be prepared for a continued attack by banks.

He cited his home state of Iowa, where he said credit unions last year fought off a "sneak attack" by banks, which wanted to increase credit union taxes in the state.

"The credit union model is under attack," he said, adding that banks are not letting up on their long fight with credit unions. "When they attack us, we've got to be ready."

He said some banking interests are also attempting to divide the credit union community.

"They're trying to divide the big from the small," he said. Some banking groups have made the argument that large credit unions should not receive the same tax benefit as smaller credit unions, since the large institutions are nothing more than banks.

He said the banking industry contends that "the only difference between you and the banks is that you don't pay taxes." That's not the case, he said, citing the cooperative model under which credit unions operate.

Nussle also said some banks are trying to "sound like us," adding that the credit union market is under attack from banks and other financial services providers. He said even Starbucks, which offers customers a variety of ways to pay their bills, is essentially a financial institution.

He added that in the face of stiff competition, credit unions must do a better job of convincing people to join their institutions.

"They know what a credit union is, but they keep walking past our door," he said. "We've got to break through the noise."
