From the conservatorship of Bethex FCU and Montauk CU to the CUNA board's decision to retain current dual membership requirements, hot topics from the past couple of weeks have left many readers with more questions than answers.
"Branding Should Reflect True Diversity," Sept. 10
Great article Deb! Love that you are putting it out there. Amazes me that as long as we've been around (well…I've been around at least – won't put you in THAT category!) that we continue to talk about our brands as being logos, brochures, websites, campaigns…the "look-and-feel," without ever addressing the REAL part of who we are – the essence of who each of you are as a credit union and the unique promise each credit union makes internally and externally. I could go on…but thanks for getting the discussion started…and letting me vent!

Deb, as Randy indicated, you are spot on. Credit unions should stop using "shiny, fake" people in their advertising (read: stock photography). People today – especially Gen Y – crave what is real and authentic about your brand. And that means diversity. Use your own members in your advertising and that will probably communicate the diversity you are seeking.

"NCUA Takes Over Bethex FCU," Sept. 18
So where were we when [CEO] Joy [Cousminer] needed help?! Shame on us for not helping her and her officials out sooner!

Whoa. Any sense of factors driving the collapse? Field of membership demographic factors? Lack of succession planning? Regulatory burden? Fraud? In any case, sad; they have a reputation as a stalwart.

The task force report almost made sense – the CUNA board did not. About a thousand of us were described as essentially zombie credit unions waiting for an eventual end that will commit our members to be passed to a faux credit union that probably should be a bank. That is a shameful conclusion from a trade association – that it already concludes a thousand or so of its members WILL go away without an iota of resistance and that from a seemingly thoughtful task force. The thousand or so should be the first checks torn up. No dues should be paid to an interlocked league nor to this pitiful, poorly led excuse for a trade association. This board of do nothing, weak kneed, lily livered pukes should be impeached and replaced with people with a willingness to lead. Shame on them!
