When it comes to helping children and others in need, NW Priority Credit Union really knows how to deliver.

The $230 million cooperative in Portland, Ore., said it raised more than $11,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association through the Fill the Satchel campaign.

That's double the size of last year's donation of about $5,500, according to NW Priority.

"Friendly contests arose, unprompted by managers, as well as advice and words of encouragement between branches, and in the end, we reached our numbers this year by remaining upbeat and compassionate in our support of the MDA," Mark Turnham, president/CEO of NW Priority, said.

Staff at each branch encouraged members to donate to Fill the Satchel.

"We don't look at this as a contest, although there is some friendly competition among our locations," Lori Connelly, vice president of marketing for NW Priority, said. "We mostly look forward to the act of giving and that's what gives back more than anything."

The credit union has participated in the annual fundraiser for four years by partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers, which was MDA's first major sponsor in the 1950s.

NW Priority was founded by postal workers in 1928.

"What mainly drives our staff and members is our compassion," Michael Murdoch, a marketing specialist at the credit union, said. "A close friend of one of our loan officers suffers from muscular dystrophy and we also have a number of members who suffer from muscle disease."

In addition, NW Priority gives generously to the afflicted children of Portland, the MDA, flu shots and the Doernbecher's Children Hospital, he added.

"There are thousands of children afflicted by [muscular dystrophy] every year, and we really open our wallets and hearts when it comes to kids," Murdoch said.
