Southern Mass Credit Union is mourning the loss of longtime director John S. Mitchell, who has passed away at the age of 84.

A dedicated board member of the Fairhaven, Mass.-based credit union for more than 25 years, Mitchell served on various committees lending his talent most recently to the audit committee, the credit union said.

He has been credited with being instrumental in the research of a location for a full service branch in Fall River, which also led to the $190 million, 10,300-member credit union's drive-up ATM at Oak Grove Avenue and New Boston Road.

Board Chairman David Darmofal and CEO Daniel Waltz said in a statement: “John will be truly missed as a valued board member of Southern Mass Credit Union. He was an excellent audit committee member. He represented the membership extremely well, especially the members from the greater Fall River Community. We will miss John's insight and expertise greatly.”

Mitchell also was on the board of the Fall River Affordable Housing Corp., and was a member of the Patrick Brennan Club, the Fall River Clover Club and the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Men's Club.
