Affinity Group Credit Union, Pontiac, Mich., teamed up with Affinity Foundation for Michigan Kids and Mortgage Center to support Operation: Kid Equip. At the credit union's Pontiac, Mich., headquarters, the CU, Mortgage Center and OKE unveiled a new OKE van that was funded by Affinity Group CU and Mortgage Center. The van will help OKE quickly reach more schools, teachers and kids throughout much of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union, Alpena, Mich., presented St. Vincent de Paul Society with a check for $1,770 to help needy families in the communities it serves. AAACU offers SkipaPays during certain times of the year which allows members to skip up to two consecutive loan or VISA payments. There is a service fee per loan to take advantage of the offer, part of which AAACU dedicates to a local charity. St. Vincent de Paul assists less fortunate people with their basic needs–from food pantry items, to financial assistance with utility bills or with other necessities, to clothes and household items from their thrift shop. The mission of the society has two aims: to do a great deal of spiritual good to its members through the exercise of charity, and to do a little spiritual and temporal good for poor families.
Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union, Daleville, Ala., had its employees donate $7,500 to 11 nonprofit organizations in its service areas in Southeast Alabama, Florida's Emerald Coast and the Mobile Bay Area. Throughout each year, AACFCU employees donate money to a general charity fund in exchange for wearing jeans to work on designated days. In December, employees nominate local organizations to receive the funds.

CUNA Mutual Group, Fort Worth, Texas, had its employees partner with their sales colleagues from around the country to raise donations for a local charity as part of a national team meeting. Those attending the meeting contributed $5,000 along with food donations to Mission Central as part of the company's continuing commitment to helping disadvantaged families served by the agency. The funds were raised through friendly competitions held throughout the three-day event, and culminated in a record-setting event donation to Mission Central. Mission Central is a nonprofit, emergency assistance center that supports economically disadvantaged families in Hurst, Euless and Bedford, Texas, in their journey to self-sufficiency.
The Golden 1Credit Union, Sacramento, Calif., had employees and members of the Paso Robles branch team up to collect 375 pairs of pajamas during country music radio station K-JUG's annual DJs for PJs drive. DJs for PJs is a nonprofit organization that provides new pairs of pajamas to benefit children in need. Originally founded in Las Vegas in 2003 the organization has grown to fill charitable needs for children throughout the country. The new pajamas were donated to the Central Coast Funds for Children. The organization was able to distribute the much-needed pajamas to nine different agencies throughout San Luis Obispo County.
Members Advantage Credit Union, Michigan City, Ind., made a donation in the amount of $500 to the Sandcastle Homeless Shelter in Michigan City. The Sandcastle Homeless Shelter is operated by the local nonprofit organization, Citizens Concerned for the Homeless. The Sandcastle Shelter is a 30-day family shelter. Available for LaPorte County residents, Sandcastle provides room and board while the residents search for work and get back on their feet. The shelter has six private rooms along with a shared kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities. According to Judy Hanish, executive director for the Citizens Concerned for the Homeless, the $500 donation will be used for basic shelter needs and to provide transportation and daycare for residents while they are searching for work.
Northeast Credit Union, Portsmouth, N.H., donated $7,500 to Homes for Our Troops to help support the building of specially adapted homes for severely wounded service members all over the country. The homes provided by Homes for Our Troops are given at no cost to the veterans. Homes for Our Troops is committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since Sept. 11, 2001. The national organization assists severely injured servicemen and servicewomen, and their immediate families, by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor, and coordinates the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently for the recipient.
Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, Philadelphia, announced it donated $5,000 to the expansion of West Philadelphia's Mariposa Food Co-op. The donation will be used to support Mariposa's Revolving Equity Fund, a donated pool of capital dedicated to increasing food access in the neighborhood. Mariposa Food Co-op will use the Revolving Equity Fund to subsidize the $200 member capital requirement, offering the benefits of co-op membership to those who cannot otherwise afford it.
Weirton-Wellsburg Chapter of Credit Unions, Weirton, W. Va., made a $1,000 donation to the Weirton Christian Center. Due to the growing requests in the Weirton community, the Christian Center has had to stretch its budget to the maximum to meet those needs. The Weirton-Wellsburg Chapter consists of the following Credit Unions: Eagle Can Employees FCU, First Choice America Community FCU, Hancock School Employees FCU, Strip Steel Community FCU and Tin Mill Employees FCU.
