With 25 freshmen members readying for next year's state legislature, the Illinois Credit Union League is using the holiday lull to ramp up its "meet and greet" program with lawmakers.
The Central Illinois chapter began the league's special get-acquainted series last Tuesday in Decatur with a luncheon for incoming House member Adam Brown, a Republican, with other chapters set to host similar events over the holidays.
"The session doesn't start until Jan. 12 but many of our chapters thought we could do some early spade work now to familiarize the new lawmakers with credit unions and our legislative agenda," a league spokesman said.

A contingent of 30 credit union representatives from 14 CUs attended the Decatur gathering. The league noted that the 14 CUs hold nearly $606 million in assets and serve more than 83,000 members in central Illinois.
In a statement, the league said the "meet and greet" grassroots sessions represent "the beginning of building a relationship with freshmen lawmakers so they become familiar with us when considering legislation related to financial services and specifically credit unions."
