Marking its largest single donation to date, the Virginia Credit Union League through its foundation has contributed $35,000 to a statewide food bank organization.
The contribution is a sharp jump in charitable giving from the $10,000 it contributed to a Salvation Army unit and the food banks in 2009, a league spokesman said.
"The funds to be used by the Federation of Virginia Food Banks demonstrates again our desire to help those most in need," he said, noting the contributions were being extended "considering Virginia credit unions have had a pretty good year."

David Miles, chief operating officer of the Credit Unions Care Foundation of the league, said CUs are "proud to help our local food banks, which do a wonderful job fighting hunger in our communities. Our hope is that our donation will help our local food banks keep their shelves stocked this holiday season."
Responding to the donation, Leslie Van Horn, executive director of Virginia Food Banks, noted that its staff "has been working tirelessly to meet a growing need and we appreciate the support of Virginia's credit unions as we work to fulfill our mission."
