Navy Federal Credit Union has settled comfortably in the Pentagon with its latest branch.
The 2,155-square-foot facility, located inside the security-enforced Pentagon on the second floor, recently opened with a staff of 12.
"What people don't realize is that the Pentagon reservation includes a group of buildings, one of which is the Navy Annex, where we've had a branch since 1948," said John Peden, senior executive vice president/chief of operations. "We also have an ATM in the Pentagon, and as far as the Department of Defense is concerned it's is the same as a branch, so we've been there on paper for some time. But some space opened up on the concourse across from Best Buy, and we took one of those spaces for a new branch."

The branch will serve 24,000 military and civilian employees and 3,000 nondefense support personnel located in Arlington, Va. In just four days, the new branch had already served 1,000 members. The new facility is part of Navy Federal's longtime strategy of living up to its motto of "We serve, where you serve."
"As our field of membership has expanded we've had to put branches where our members are and we're committed to having a brick and mortar presence as well as online and call centers, delivering service across all channels for everyone," said Peden.
As far as its physical presence, eight more branch openings are slated for this year and another 15 are to open in 2011. Peden added that Navy Federal also remains open to making the most of opportunities with other credit unions and points to the recent merger with USA Federal CU.
"That was a wonderful fit for us as both organizations were committed to serve the military and all the USA Federal employees were brought on board," said Peden. "We defense credit unions take care of the people who take care of our country, and it's that bond we all share. So any credit union that serves the military that contact us to say they need help taking care of members we go out of our way to help them."
