American Heritage Federal Credit Union, Philadelphia, helped the Philadelphia Charter Academy kick off its "Bring Your Own Bag" project recently. The project, which is sponsored by American Heritage, is to make the children more aware of the effects plastic bags have on the environment. The credit union's "Green Team" is sponsoring three schools with over 300 local children participating. It is the team's hope that they will learn about the harmful impact of plastic bags and spread the message to their families, which will keep nearly 150,000 plastic bags out of our oceans and landfills and off our sidewalks.
Arizona State Credit Union, Phoenix, hosted eight shred-a-thons throughout its Northern Arizona branches and recycled more than 46,000 pounds of paper, which is the equivalent of saving 288 trees. The credit union's "Shred the Word" campaign helped members of the community by raising awareness about the importance of shredding personal documents to protect against identity theft. Hundreds of area residents attended the events, which ran from February to September, and properly disposed of sensitive documents in a safe and secure manner.
BCU, Vernon Hills, Ill., notified member Daphne Durant that her name was selected as the grand-prize winner from thousands of PSCU Financial Services Bill Pay Summer Sweepstakes entries submitted by members of the 129 credit unions nationwide who took part in the contest. Durant entered the sweepstakes by signing up for BCU's online bill pay service. The credit union reported a 10% increase in online bill pay usage by BCU members during the sweepstakes period.

Diamond Credit Union, Pottstown, Pa., was the lead sponsor of the 2010 Reading Hospital and Medical Center Road Run recently. Employees of the credit union were on hand for the annual fundraising run to benefit projects of The Friends of The Reading Hospital. More than 2,000 runners were part of the event, which boasted 5K and 10K runs and a one-mile fun run.
Eagle One Federal Credit Union, Philadelphia, joined with the Fishtown Neighbors Association and the Fishtown community for a day of fun family activities at the third annual River City Festival at Penn Treaty Park on the Delaware River. In addition to a 5K run in the morning, the event featured food from local restaurants, local art and crafts for sale, historical displays and information on community services. Credit union employees were on hand to greet residents and visitors, passing out information about the credit union and giving away free gifts to all who stopped by.
FocalPoint Federal Credit Union, Syracuse, N.Y., celebrated the first anniversary of its Chittenango branch. The credit union showed its appreciation to its members and neighbors in the community by conducting weekly prize drawings for those who signed up for its services. The credit union also hosted a penny war competition in local schools and a Halloween party featuring free food, paper shredding, live music and a costume contest.
Genisys Credit Union, Auburn Hills, Mich., along with Brandon Township Parks and Recreation, sponsored the 22nd annual Septemberfest in downtown Ortonville. The event hosted activities for people of all ages including the Ted Baker Memorial Car Show, parades, live music, food, magic shows, vendors, contests, stage entertainment and more. Genisys staff donated their time to assist with the children's game tent and Planet X inflatables. The Della Kozloff Kids Area was named in memory of the late Ortonville branch manager who loved volunteering her time in the community.
Gesa Credit Union, Richland, Wash., announced that the cruise ship Portland Spirit donated space and hosted the credit union's annual high school branch orientation called "Cruise To Success." Gesa now operates high school branches in seven public high schools in the area. Approximately 100 people from those schools and Gesa boarded the Portland Spirit for an evening of credit union orientation and training.
New York Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., has begun its 2010 LifeSmarts competition, an educational contest that tests middle and high school students nationwide through online quizzes and live contests about consumer rights, the environment, health and safety, technology and finance. LifeSmarts is a program of the National Consumers League. Last year, an estimated 100,000 students and teachers across the country answered more than 3.5 million LifeSmarts questions.
Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union, Harrisburg, Pa., celebrated International Credit Union Day by allowing employees to spend the day assisting local nonprofit organizations. Nine credit union volunteers spent the day helping such organizations as the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley, the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, the Humane Society, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, the Second Mile and the Indiana County Community Action Program.
