Aberdeen Proving Ground Federal Credit Union, Aberdeen, Md., hosted a successful community donation drive in August and September, collecting new school supplies for partner schools in Harford and Cecil counties. During its annual back-to-school supply drive, APGFCU members and employees donated over 1,200 items, including backpacks, lunch bags, notebooks, crayons, glue sticks and more. Collected items were distributed to the schoolchildren in September.
Andrews Federal Credit Union, Suitland, Md., donated $5,000 to the 2010 "New Jersey Run for the Fallen" event. During the event, a team of 28 active-duty and reserve service members from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst ran from Cape May, N.J., to Holmdel, N.J., in honor of fallen service members. The runners marked each mile with an American flag and signed a card in remembrance of New Jersey soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines killed in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. All proceeds raised from the event were donated to the Gold Star Mother's National Monument being built in Washington, D.C.
Bethpage Federal Credit Union, Bethpage, N.Y., helped support the Child Care Council of Suffolk, which celebrated its 25th anniversary of ensuring that children, families, providers, employers and the public in Suffolk County have access to quality child care. The Champions of Children benefit luncheon, which was supported by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Empire National Bank, was attended by more than 230 guests. Last year alone, CCCS served more than 5,780 children and staged more than 150 educational workshops for providers.

Cabrillo Credit Union, San Diego, participated in the American Heart Association's Heart Walk in Balboa Park. Two years ago, Cabrillo began incorporating charity walks into their Wellness Program as a way to encourage healthy living and community involvement. The credit union team, "Cabrillo Cares," was outfitted in team shirts designed by credit union staff. Cabrillo's efforts raised over $400 for the American Heart Association.
Credit Union of Georgia, Atlanta, made a donation to Reinhardt University's 2010-11 A DAY program. The A DAY for Reinhardt campaign was formed in 1988 and is an annual effort to provide support for Cherokee County students attending Reinhardt University. A DAY helps to fund the University's Cherokee County Grant Program, which gives eligible students the opportunity to receive as much as $8,000 during their four years at the University.
Gateway Metro Credit Union, St. Louis, supported the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at the Light the Night charity walk in Forest Park. A record-breaking 86 walkers showed up and contributed $1,400 to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society fight leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma.
Jackson Chapter of Credit Unions, Jackson, Miss., announced their support of the Jackson Friendly Home for two consecutive years. The mission of the charity is to provide low-income housing to women of limited means in a safe, healthy, homelike atmosphere. The chapter hosted a community golf outing with all proceeds being awarded to the Jackson Friendly Home for a total of $5,800. The group also raises funds for the home in a variety of other creative ways throughout the year, including employee dress-down days, bake sales, cookbook and discount card sales, raffles, household donation drives and more. Additionally, volunteer staff from area credit unions host a monthly themed lunch for the employees at the home.
Maine Credit Union League, Portland, Maine, celebrated the beginning of National Co-Op Month by marking the fifth anniversary of Maine's first "Food Mobile" with a $10,500 contribution to ensure the continued success of this important tool in ending hunger in Maine. The Food Mobile is part of the credit union league's Campaign for Ending Hunger, which has raised and contributed more than $3.5 million to help end hunger in Maine since 1990.
