Credit unions that participate in the Allpoint ATM Network will soon be able to offer their members surcharge-free ATMs in Australia as well as around their local communities.

Allpoint is an ATM network that provides surcharge-free ATM access to cardholders while charging the card-issuing institution a fee based on the number of cards it issues. The network claims to be the largest surcharge-free ATM network, with 40,000 machines spread across the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.

Allpoint partnered with a firm called Customers Limited to bring the surcharge-free service to 5,000 ATMs in the country.

"The introduction of ATM surcharging (Direct Charge) in Australia in 2009 has presented a natural opportunity for Allpoint to expand its global surcharge-free footprint," said Ben Psillas, founder and president of Allpoint Network. "The partnership with Customers brings together two industry leaders to provide Australians unprecedented surcharge-free access, while expanding and enhancing the convenience and value of Allpoint for existing Allpoint Members."

"Customers is delighted to be Allpoint's provider of choice in Australia as they look to expand their global surcharge-free ATM network outside of the United States and the United Kingdom," said Tim Wildash, Customers' managing director. "This partnership provides further recognition of the class-leading service that the Customers' network provides and demonstrates the type of innovation which the company aims to continue to bring to the Australian market. Cardholders of financial institutions that choose to join Allpoint will have unprecedented ATM access across Australia through the Customers' network without paying a Direct Charge."
