Financial Center, Indianapolis, has raised $26,267.93 for the American Red Cross, contributing to the Haiti earthquake relief effort. The funds will provide shelter, improve the water supply and sewage systems, and create health programs for the victims of the disaster. The donation was made possible by member contributions through online banking as well as a $7,500 gift from Financial Center.
OMNI Credit Union, Battle Creek, Mich., generated $2,500 from its "OMNI Gives Back" program for the benefit of Three Rivers Area Mentoring. The donation was reserved for a summer program designed to teach money management and employment skills. The program also contributed $2,000 to Domestic and Sexual Abuse Services, which will fund operations at the Hildmann House, a domestic violence shelter.
MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union, Macon, Ga., made a donation to the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #3, an organization that dedicates itself to several charity and service events throughout the year. The donation will help programs such as the Order's Bicycle Safety Helment-Kids ID Program and food drives.

Hudson River Community Credit Union, Cohoes, N.Y., raised $580 through an office Jeans for Charity Program for Vanderheyden, a Wayantskill N.Y-based nonprofit organization that supports underprivileged youth and special needs children. The money will provide youth with tuxedos and dresses for the organization's Spring Fling Prom event.
Pacific Service Credit Union, Walnut Creek, Calif., donated computers for the dedication of a research lab at a Bread Project training facility. The nonprofit organization provides low income individuals with the necessary skills for employment in the food industry. The donated equipment will allow trainees to create resumes, search for employment, and improve computer literacy. The credit union also donated funds to the Oakland East Bay Symphony MUSE program, an in-school instrumental music course at 19 Oakland schools. The money will help supply the program with keyboards, headphones, recorders, and stereo systems for its 3,000 participants.
Elevations Credit Union, Boulder, Colo., established the Elevations Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing charitable donations to communities within the credit union's service area. The foundation replaced the former Community Relations Committee, which raised over $1 million in scholarships, grants and donations in Boulder and Broomfield Counties. The Elevations Foundation will afford the credit union the ability to receive and administer funds exclusively for charities.
State Employees' Credit Union, Raleigh, N.C., donated $300,000 to Hospice Cleveland County for the organization's new 15,000-square-foot addition. The eight-bed King's Mountain addition is already fully occupied with patients and staffed with care givers. SECU's donation is the largest grant the Hospice has ever received.
HarborOne Credit Union, Brockton, Mass., announced that it will dispense a total of $27,000 in donations to nine local non-profit organizations. James W. Blake, President and CEO of HarborOne said that a strong financial year in 2009 allowed the credit union to give back to the community through service organizations.
1st Financial Federal Credit Union, Alliance Credit Union, Electro Savings Credit union and Vantage Credit Union, St. Louis, teamed up to donate $2,455 to the Children's Miracle Network. The money was raised by a charity program in which the credit unions donated $5 for each new youth account opened and each deposit greater than $50 at their credit unions during April. The amount of youth account openings more than doubled at Alliance. The credit union, which averages 16 youth account openings per month, reported 40 openings in April.
Redwood Credit Union, Santa Rosa, Calif., has coordinated a staff effort to support a variety of local nonprofit organizations. Teams of more than 80 Redwood employees participated in Human Race events in which walkers and runners were invited to collect pledges and complete a 3K or 10K course. Participants then donated the proceeds to an organization of their choice. The tri-county events earned more than $11,000.
Homes for Our Troops, Columbia, Miss., teamed up with Missouri credit unions to raise $100,000 toward the construction of a specially adapted home for Army Staff Sergeant Robert Canine, who lost both of his legs below the knee in Iraq. The group has provided men and women injured in service with more than 50 adapted homes across the country. Across the state, credit unions raised money through charity events such as bake sales, golf outings, and car washes.
Credit Union of Georgia, Woodstock, Ga., donated $5,000 to aid Marietta High School in its effort to provide students with updated digital sports video editing software. The new equipment will allow the school's Athletic Department to produce higher quality sports demos, highlights, and video cut-ups. The videos are intended for scouting purposes and will be sent to colleges and universities to increase scholarship opportunities for Marietta High School athletes.
Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union, Myrtle Beach, S.C., launched a Learning to Save promotion to raise money for high school and middle school students. Participants were asked to answer a question regarding financial literacy and its implications for the future. Winners were awarded $100 in addition to having $500 donated to their respective schools. Jon Allen, age eight, Quannisha Green, age 11, and Summer Smith, age 17, were chosen from among 400 applicants as this year's Learning to Save winners.
