Georgia Federal Credit Union, Duluth, Ga., announced the winners for its 2010 John F. Donoghue Catholic scholarships, created in honor of the archbishop who petitioned to add credit union benefits to members of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. The top winner was Katherine Myers, who received $1,500. Second place of $1,000 was awarded to Jennifer Underhill. This is the third year the credit union has awarded scholarships to Catholic school students. Selection was based on academic accomplishments, leadership and participation in both school and community activities and an essay competition.

Illinois Credit Union League, Naperville, Ill., announced that its foundation awarded $50,800 in small credit union development, community service, marketing and business development, and financial independence and revitalization Effort grants, as well as $22,000 in scholarships. Scholarships were to be used for the league's many educational opportunities, as well as CUNA schools.

Gateway Metro Federal Credit Union, St. Louis, awarded four local high school seniors with $1,000 Judith A. Lowe memorial scholarships. Benjamin Dollschnieder, Jacob Lamke, Lauren Smith and Angela Struemph were chosen based on their high school accomplishments, volunteer activities, and their plan for using their financial savvy to make their future brighter. Applicants also turned in recommendation letters and an essay on the importance of financial education. Additionally, seniors who applied needed to be members of the credit union who were planning to attend college or trade school.

TruMark Financial Credit Union, Trevose, Pa., provided college scholarships to three high school seniors who fared best in its financial jeopardy competition. Grand prize winner Scott Prichard beat out the other eight contestants for a $5,000 scholarship while second prize winner Lee Richlin won a $2,000 scholarship and Steven Picciotti won $1,000 toward college. In addition to the top three winners, the six other contestants each received a $200 scholarship which was deposited into an account opened in their name.

Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union, Myrtle Beach, S.C., announced that for the fourth year it partnered with Horry Telephone Cooperative Inc. and 104.9 BOB FM to choose two graduating high school seniors to win $1,000 each in scholarship awards. The 2010 KEY scholarship award winners were Merritt Flanigan and Skyelar Parrott. Application packets were distributed to high school guidance counselors and the scholarship opportunities were advertised on BOB FM and on all partners' websites. The 2010 award recipients were scored as most qualified for the KEY scholarship based on completed application, academics, school and/or community involvement, household income and school choice.

U of I Employees Credit Union, Champaign, Ill., announced it will announce the seven recepients of its 2010 orange and blue Scholarships, totaling $5000, at a press conference. The seven annual scholarships are available on a nonrenewable basis to members who are college-bound high school seniors that plan to attend the University of Illinois, Parkland College, or another Illinois college or university.

AOD Federal Credit Union, Bynum, Ala., announced 2010 scholarship recipients at an honorary awards ceremony hosted by the credit union's board of directors and management. The 10 winners were Lauryn E. Goss, Erin Criner, Shelby N. Howell, CharQuila Jelks, Connor Read, Miranda Senior, Hillary B. Stephens, Laura Strickland, Marley Truett and Samantha Wesson. In addition, the scholarship recipients were also honored at each of their schools' Awards Day ceremonies.

Westerra Credit Union, Denver, offered graduating high school seniors $1,000 scholarships to attend a technical school, college or university. This year, however, two extra scholarships-for a total of 17-were added thanks to the generosity of credit union member Steve Willey. When he learned about the credit union's college scholarship program from his base in Afghanistan, Willey e-mailed the credit union that he was eager to donate.

Affinity Federal Credit Union, Basking Ridge, N.J., announced it is accepting applications for the Richard A. Romano scholarship award. The award is offered to Rutgers University undergraduate students, entering freshmen, transfers and current students, who are members of Affinity and have proven academic excellence and a passion for giving back to the community. The program is funded by the Affinity Foundation.

Windsor Family Credit Union, Windsor, Ontario, announced its acceptance of submissions for the Harold Hewitt Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2001 as a yearly contribution to the post-secondary education of youth in the community. Since 2001, a total of $32,000 has been presented under the scholarship. The credit union is continuing the tradition by presenting a total of $5,000 to 16 youth. This special scholarship was inspired by the late Harold Hewitt, a long-term director on the credit union's board whose dedication to the community was an integral part of the credit union.
