CUNA forecast its lobbying/communications blitz of contacting lawmakers opposing the Durbin interchange amendment could reach 350,000 by end of day and possibly 500,000 by Thursday.
The blitz coincides with a special two-day Hike the Hill gathering of 1,000 CEOs, employees and members this week.
Joined by NAFCU, state leagues, CU vendors and others, CUNA put its interchange campaign into overdrive in preparation for a Senate-House conference perhaps next week on the controversial bill, deemed particularly costly to CU card programs.

As part of the fly-in campaign, CU leaders including many league staffers and boards began arriving today for tonight's CUNA reception in the Columbus Room of Union Station.
A larger number of CU executives are expected tomorrow. NAFCU said it too has been arranging for a large delegation to pin down lawmaker support though there have been warnings that the job of deleting the amendment "is an uphill climb" given the reform bill's momentum and the large retailer turnout.
A CUNA spokesman said it stepped up its contact lawmaker campaign May 24 and reached the 250,000 mark only two weeks after initially asking credit unions to participate by e-mailing, faxing or visiting Congressmen. We are hearing now that this is the largest grassroots push since the health care debate earlier this year."
