As floodwaters were starting to recede and cleanup efforts begun, Tennessee credit union executives were assessing damage estimates Wednesday from rain-soaked facilities as several branches remained closed in both metro Nashville and Memphis.

The $351 million First South CU of Bartlett said its branch on the Mid-South Naval Support Activity Base has been closed since Monday because of a base lockdown due to the flooding.

Bonnette Dawson, president/CEO of the $175 million Old Hickory CU, said the CU's Nashville branch also closed on Monday and experienced extensive water damage to carpeting, drywalls and "now it's pretty iffy whether we can re-open tomorrow" in a facility leased from Southeast Financial CU. She credits her senior IT employee with saving costly computer equipment from ruin "by being there on Sunday and stopping the water from seeping into the computer room or we would have been shut down."

Six other branches of Old Hickory also shuttered early in the week have now re-opened, said Dawson noting also employees have struggled to get work because of closed bridges and roads.
"For one of my employees who can usually make the commute in 20-to 30 minutes it took him three hours to get to work," she said.
