Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) who has enjoyed strong support from credit unions during his two terms in the House of Representatives, is going to announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate, according to several media reports.
Ellsworth, a former sheriff, has received $23,000 from CUNA's political action committee during the last three election cycles and $1,000 from NAFCU's political action committee. The lawmaker represents the 8th District, which is in the southwest part of the state. Its largest cities are Evansville and Terre Haute.
He is seeking to succeed Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), a member of the Senate Banking Committee and credit union ally, who announced Monday he will not seek a third term.
Several Republicans, including former Sen. Dan Coats and former Rep. John Hostettler are seeking the GOP nomination.
