Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke came one step closer to a second term this afternoon when the Senate voted 77-23 to end the debate on his confirmation.
Senators of both parties expressed opposition to him being reconfirmed because they complained about his role and that of the Fed during the recent financial crisis. And some senators who voted to end the debate said they would ultimately vote against him on a final vote.
Because several senators had placed a hold on Bernanke's nomination, 60 votes were required to end debate. However, 51 votes are needed to confirm Bernanke.
