Consumers are more confident about the economy, but still a bit worried.
The Consumer Confidence Index was 55.9 this month, up from December's level of 53.6, the Conference Board reported today.
The New York City-based research organization's survey of 5,000 families also indicated that the Present Situation Index, which measures consumer assessment of current conditions, rose dramatically to 25 from 20.02.

The percentage of consumers describing business conditions as "good" increased to 9.0%, from 7.5% in December, while those saying conditions are "bad" also increased, to 46.1%, compared with 45% in December.
The percentage of those who said jobs are "hard to get" fell to 47.4% from 48.1% in December, and those who said jobs are "plentiful" increased to 4.3% from 3.1% in December.
