Mountain America Credit Union is mourning the loss of longtime Chairman H. Floyd Tanner. Serving as board chair at the $2.8 billion credit union for the past 16 years, Tanner was a veteran of the credit union movement, serving on the board for a total of 39 years. A great advocate of credit unions, Tanner and his wife, Joyce, who passed away last month, never missed an opportunity to talk up the benefits of being a credit union member. Tanner’s dedication to growing the Salt Lake City-based credit union was recognized by CUES, and he was named the 2008 Director of the Year. During his tenure, the credit union built more than 50 new branches and membership grew by 185%. Equally active in the community, Tanner had been at the forefront of community outreach, sponsoring the Primary Children’s Medical Center through raising and donating over $500,000 to it during the past five years. He also led an initiative to support active duty troops by waiving interest on loans while deployed. “Floyd Tanner has been an important part of the success of Mountain America Credit Union. His dedication, wisdom and management have provided consistent direction to the credit union for over 39 years,” said MACU President/CEO Sterling Nielsen. “Words cannot describe how much he will be missed. His dedication and selfless service to Mountain America Credit Union has been instrumental in making our credit union one of the best in the nation.”
