The political timing could not be better for Missouri credit unions next week to join CUNA's national Hike the Hill in light of a special Dec. 11 meeting with Rep. Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican running for a U.S. Senate seat in 2010.
"This is a great opportunity for all credit unions across the state, not just from Blunt's seventh district, to come to St. Louis to discuss the issues," said a spokeswoman for the Missouri Credit Union Association. MCUA expects 15 of its member CEOs to join the Washington gathering, and "we're getting lots of RSVPs now for Dec. 11," the spokeswoman said.
Two days after CUNA's fly-in, which expects 600 CU leaders on Dec. 8-9, the Missouri trade group expects to use an originally scheduled Blunt fundraiser "to talk about our concerns directly" to Blunt, identified as a long-time CU supporter.

She noted the hottest CU issue in Missouri remains overdraft protection "and some of those limitations which can hurt consumers" particularly the once a month rule restricting the number of overdraft fees.
Blunt is running for a Senate seat currently held by Kit Bond, who is not running for re-election.
