The Defense Credit Union Council, joined by the $52 million Heart O' Texas CU, were extending new financial aid Thursday to Fort Hood victims as officials of area CUs continued to seek out linkups with military charities to funnel member contributions.

"For my employees and myself, we are still in a state of disbelief," commented Michael Chaney, president/CEO of Heart O' Texas, which has two branches at the gates of the Fort Hood base.

Heart O' Texas as already made arrangements to take care of travel expense for the family of one victim who remains in a Killeen hospital. The CU, at the same time, is making a $2,000 contribution to the Association of the U.S. Army, one of the designated charity units along with the Fort Hood Chaplain's Fund as cited earlier this week by the Texas Credit Union League.

"Pentagon Federal and the Texas League are doing outstanding work in making contributions and helping out Fort Hood members," commented Arty Arteaga, president/CEO of the Defense Council in Washington whose foundation is also making a contribution to Fort Hood charities.

For Heart O'Texas, the Nov.5 deaths at Fort Hood "bring back some painful memories for all of us," said Chaney noting the 1991 murder of its former CEO Juanita Williams in a Luby's Cafeteria.
