Unitus Community Credit Union, Salem, Ore., announced that its branch located in Salem won the regional/national business of the year award from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce. The credit union received the award partially because of its contributions to the community. For several years the credit union has held a host of events to help community organizations, including sponsoring toy drives, clothing drives and holding random acts of kindness days. Credit union representatives also have taught finance classes at area high schools and sponsored school-supply drives.
Michigan Credit Union League, East Lansing, Mich., honored Pat McPharlin, president/CEO of MSU Federal Credit Union, as the Hall of Fame distinguished citizen at their annual meeting in Traverse City, Mich. McPharlin was recognized for his leadership based on his dedication to the MSU FCU, the credit union movement, his community and his university. He served his credit union since 1969 as a vice president of member services before becoming president in 2001. He has doubled MSU FCU's assets within five years of being president. McPharlin is also an active community leader and serves as treasurer for the Capital Area United Way. He has served as a board member for the March of Dimes, along with his involvement in other organizations.
Navy Federal Credit Union, Vienna, Va., was presented a mailing excellence award for saving the credit union $4.5 million in postage from the Northern Virginia District of the United States Postal Service. Navy Federal's 21 person staff was able to do this by presorting its mail and adhering to postal guidelines. The $4.5 million discount will be used to support its credit union members.
Niagara County's Federal Credit Union, Albany, N.Y., received the 2009 Ralph W. Hillman marketing award from Universal Sharing Network Inc. The Ralph W. Hillman award recognizes a participating UsNet credit union for best exemplifying the spirit and enthusiasm consistently exhibited by Hillman in his support of the shared branching network. Hillman served as UsNet's chairman of the board from 2001-2003 and had been a board member since 1998. The award seeks to honor those participants in the network who capture the same energy and enthusiasm that made Hillman the spirited leader he was.

Washington Credit Union Foundation, Federal Way, Wash., awarded several credit union leaders at its summit awards gala. The highest statewide honor, the 2009 mark of excellence award, went to Washington State Employees Credit Union President/CEO Kevin Foster-Keddie for over 25 years of sustained leadership. The outstanding credit union volunteer award was presented to Graeme Sackrison, a board member at Generations Credit Union. O Bee Credit Union President/CEO Bruce Cramer won the distinguished credit union professional of the year award. A legacy award was presented to Harborstone Credit Union. Stateside CUNA awards were presented to Spokane Teachers Credit Union, SnoCope Federal Credit Union, O Bee Credit Union, Horizon Credit Union and Gesa Credit Union.
Rivermark Community Credit Union, Beaverton, Ore., received an award from The Portland Business Journal as one of the top ten mid-size corporate philanthropists. Scott Burgess, the credit union's president/CEO, received the award at the corporate philanthropy awards luncheon hosted by The Journal at the Marriott in downtown Portland. In the past year, the credit union has supported key organizations in the community, including the Tualatin Hills Park and Recreation District, Hawthorne Business Association, Oregon Food Bank, Clackamas County Children's Center and School House Supplies.
Hudson River Community Credit Union, Glens Falls, N.Y., received a five-star superior rating for financial strength and stability from Bauer Financial Inc.'s. Five-stars is the highest rating attainable from Bauer. Earning a five-star rating indicated that the credit union is one of the strongest in the nation. This is the 59th consecutive quarter that the credit union has earned this honor.
Community First Credit Union, Jacksonville, Fla., awarded Terry Parker High School teacher Julia Samms with its touchdown for teachers recognition and club seats to a Jaguars game. Samms was nominated by several students, each praising her example of professionalism and self respect as well as a passion for teaching. She has been a reading teacher for just over two years.
Michigan First Credit Union, Lathrup Village, Mich., was honored with the 2009 corporate economic bright spot award. The credit union was recognized for its outstanding work in bringing offers to members and the community, the latest technology and banking conveniences, along with supporting the community through contributions. Also they were recognized for their, event support, financial literacy support with their Michigan First@Schools program and other activities.
Tobyhanna Federal Credit Union, Scranton, Pa., announced its employees were presented with the 2009 Pocono's Choice award. The Pocono's Choice awards are given out each year to help newcomers know the bests of the area. An independent market-research firm performs a random telephone survey asking residents to name the area's top leading businesses. Local residents voted Tobyhanna as the Pocono's Choice Credit Union.
