In hurricane-wracked Galveston, Texas credit union managers are saying what a difference a year makes. No sign of anything like Ike of 2008, not even a whiff.
"It's September and it's always a bit tense around here but we're sure glad the Texas Credit Union League is going ahead and holding their meeting here," said Carol Purdy, president/CEO of the $40 million Coastal Community CU of Galveston..
A year ago, Hurricane Ike destroyed much of Galveston Island, the league's 22nd annual Credit Union Marketing & Business Development Conference slated for the historic Hotel Galvez seemed certain to be cancelled or relocated.

But in a gesture of showing solidarity with Galveston, which has restored many of its businesses and tourist sites, the league said it is going ahead as planned to hold the 2009 conference Nov. 4-6 with 150 expected.
"I was able to make it to that Austin conference also in November and it was actually the first time I was able to get away from the credit union office even for a day and it was a relief." said Purdy, who managed to restore CU operations despite major damage.
The Galveston CU was only able to get back into its main office last March. City fathers later praised Purdy for her role in ensuring service to cashless police and firemen during the crisis.
